Nepal has more than 651 species of butterflies which is 3.72 of world’s butterflies. Thanks to Kathmandu valley’s mild and temperate weather conditions, the butterflies are found all year around, however the best time to see such butterflies is during the month of late march and April, mid May/June, and late of August/September.
The forested areas in Nepal are a good source for sightseeing these butterflies. There are wide varieties of species that are found specifically only in some parts of Nepal. With the distribution of butterflies in Nepal being specific, about 10 percent of the butterflies are Palaearctic species found at above 3,000 m, and about 90 percent Oriental species are found around Swayambhu, the base of the hills and forest streams at Godavari, Nagarjuna, Budhanilkantha and Sundarijal, which are some few locations popular for this activity and attracts many visitors each year. The locations are the hill stations that are very beautiful in scenery and natural views.
Butterfly watching is one of many popular activities to do here if you like indulging into the nature and what it offers. All these species are categorized under 11 families of the existing of 15 families in the world. About 29 species and sub-species have been found widespread in the country.
Butterflies can be found from 2,700m to 5,500m in the Himalayas region; the variety differs from Parnassius acdestis (Sikkim Banded Apollo), Aglais Ladakensis (Ladak Tortoise Shell) and Pontia Sherpae (Sherpa white) that exists in higher altitude in the western Himalayas of Nepal and other various species that are found in different parts of the world.
