Saga Dawa Festival

Nature At Its Best

Saga Dawa Festival is considered as an annual festival of great importance for the Tibetans. The fifteenth day of the fourth month in the Tibetan calendar is considered to be the day Buddha Sakyamuni was born and attained Nirvana. During this period the Tibetans go to Mount Kailash two or three weeks before. The poles are replaced by flags. During the flagpole ceremony, as the pole’s tip is raised and pointed east toward Gyangdrak monastery, monks of that monastery perform a special ritual. Music from long trumpets, conch shells, and other instruments welcome the rising flagpole. This festival is usually celebrated to rejoice the birth, life, enlightenment and death of Gautam Buddha.

Journey to Kailash will give you the chance to explore the Saga Dawa Festival, which is unique and has its own separate identity. Usually the travelers heading towards the Mount Kailash and the lake of Mansarovar get to explore around the time the festival is being celebrated. After trekking and hiking for many days when you reach the Mount Kailash, you will be thrilled to learn about this festival of the Saga Dawa, celebrated by the Tibetans residing there. They believe that good deeds and prayers are multiplied thousand fold during this event. So you can see everyone deep in prayers and trying to appease the gods. This is considered very important festival; in the Tibetan culture. Not only that but In fact, being a part of this holy event is such a moving experience that you come back with a deep sense of inner satisfaction that stays with you for a long time.
