Potala Palace

Nature At Its Best

Located northwest of Lhasa city, Potala Palace is on the side of Marpo Ri and is considered one of the best sites of Lhasa. The palace was a royal palace of King Songstan Gampo, which was built around 637 but was re built during the 16th century, by Dalai Lama where he also stayed. The Potala palace was also listed as the world heritage site by UNESCO. The Potala palace has been considered as the testament of the Tibetan people and their beliefs, every year thousands of the pilgrims come over to the palace to pay homage. This palace has great cultural and political significance among the many other sites of the Tibetan region.

From as early as the eleventh century the palace was called Potala. This name perhaps derives from Mt. Potala, the mythological mountain abode of the Bodhisattva Chenresi (Avilokiteshvara / Kuan Yin) in southern India. The Emperor Songtsen Gampo had been regarded as an incarnation of Chenresi. Given that he founded the Potala, it’s likely that the name was derived from the name of that Indian sacred mountain. It was also considered as the seat of the Tibetan government where all the ceremonies of the state took place and it also housed a religious school for the monks. It is also regarded as the “Pearl of the roof of the world”.

Known as the landmark of Lhasa and Tibet, and also used to be the political center of Tibet, as the most grand and highest palace in the world, it boasts rich remnants and artworks, especially the unique Snow Area Cultural heritage. It represents the architecture and craftsmanship of the Tibetan, Han and Mongolian people.
