Jokhang Temple

Nature At Its Best

The spiritual temple for the Tibetan people, Jokhang temple, is considered one of the holiest temples for Tibetan people. It was originally called Tsuklakang, which means house of religious science or house of wisdom. Listed in the World Cultural Heritages with Potala Palace and Norbulingka, Jokhang temple is situated at the heart of the old town of Lhasa and surrounded by Barkhor Street, this 4 storied building, built in the 7th century by Songtsan Gambo, with roofs covered with gilded bronze tiles, demonstrates a combination of the architectural style of Han, Tibetan, India and Nepal as well. Visiting the Jokhang temple will let you in to the mysterious world of the Tibetan culture and give you the understanding of the Tibetan devotion and traditions.

Built by the Tibetan King, Songstan Gambo, legends has it that the temple was built when the King threw his ring into the air to show where to build the temple. The ring fell into a lake and a stupa emerged from the water. Then the lake was filled by sand and soil carried by thousands of white rams, the main transport way at that time. The construction is said to have lasted for three long years and the temple initially was called Rasa, which means the land of the Ram. After many Buddha preserved the name was changed into Jokhang while the city’s name was changed into Lhasa.

During some anti Buddhist activities the temple was destructed twice which lead to the close of the temple but later after a series of reconstructions in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty, the temple was re built as the massive building consisting of three floors and an open roof filled with chapels and chambers.
