Taj Mahal

Nature At Its Best

Taj Mahal, a UNESCO world heritage site is an ivory-white marble crypt on the south bank of the Yamuna River in the Indian city of Agra which is among the most popular tourist destinations in India.

It was custom-built in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan who reigned from 1628 to 1658, to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tomb is the centerpiece of a 42-acre complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall. The construction of Taj Mahal was completed in 1653 at a cost estimated to be around 32 million rupees which in 2015 estimates to be around 52.8 billion rupees. It is said that the builders, hands were cut off by the Mughal emperor so that they could never recreate such architectural beauty after the completion of this marbled beauty. The site was listed as a world heritage site in around 1983 for being the “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage”. The Taj Mahal depicts the Mughal Empire and mughal inspired art from the ancient era. Taj Mahal is also considered as the symbolism of love and affection of the Emperor towards his deceased wife.

The Taj Mahal is visited by many of the tourists every year; even by some of the renowned names across the world have been a visitor to this beautiful site including Princess Diana of England. While there are millions of visitors every year, Taj Mahal tries its best to keep its ancient beauty well preserved as with air pollution and increasing urbanization around the area, the threat to Taj Mahal’s endurance continues. However, government is paying attention to these prevailing problems.
