Takin Preserve

Nature At Its Best

Takin, is the national animal of Bhutan that is among its unique endangered species. Takin preserve shelters the national animal as it holds cultural, religious and national significance. The animals were released into the wild but the Takins, wandered around the streets looking for food, and that is why they were put back into captivity. As the Bhutanese king believed that the animals should be let free rather than putting them under captivity, Takin preserve was thus formulated in order to preserve these Takins wandering wild in the streets of Bhutan and causing hazards.

Takin which resembles this unusual animal looks like both; a cow and a goat. The local legend foretells that the appearance of takin to popular saint Drukpa Kuenlay, who was said to be very fond of meat, but always after eating the animal, he used his spiritual power to give it life again. Once he was offered body of cow and head of the goat. After the saint finished his meal, he said his magic formula over the bare bones and turned that alive.

Thus the takin was created. Thus the Takin owes its special place in Bhutanese culture to the unconventional tantric saint, Drukpa Kunley. The myth is highly believed by the Bhutanese people around the area, and the museum has become of great importance and curiosity to even the tourists who come to Bhutan.
